already very active in the second half of the 13th century. At that
time most of the furnaces were to be found on the island, and the

precise rules governing the manufacture of glass.Towards the second
half of the 15th century,Angelo Barovier, invented a special type of
glass which came to be known as “cristallo”, because it was so
clear and transparent it looked just loke rock crystal. The invention
was a turning point for the development of the glassmaking industry,
coming, as it did, at he height of the Renaissance period, and the
new medium coupled with the new forms was to achieve spectacular
results. At the beginning of the 16th century there was a succession

unsurpassed characteristics, such as the quality of the glass
itself, the amazing techniquess employed in its production and the
breath taking artistry of the glass masters. In the centuries which
followed, and especially during the baroque period, the virtuosityof
the glass masters knew no limits, every object they fashined became a
wonderful and spectacular thing of beauty.
